Mini Review

Ah, the sports season is back. Well as much as you can call Speedball 2 a sport. The main premise is to play and manage your team “Brutal Deluxe”. Along the way you will not only be in charge of the on pitch play but also the expenses on amour upgrades. The game itself if a cross between American Football and Handball. In essence your team must throw a metal ball in to a goal at the opposition end. You will find yourself sliding and punching to victory and do what you can to overpower your opponent. For extra bonus points there are extra pitch features such as a loop on the half way line at either side and stars to light up.

These can prove invaluable if you can incorporate these bonuses in to your regular game play style. In terms of playability it could be frustrating and confusing until you have mastered a few of the basics such as the long lob and tackling. The two player option is always fun although it’s easy to forget about the goals and just focus on the opposition battering. There’s a delightful animation as the stretcher comes on to carry players off. The 1 player season mode will still give you plenty of challenge if this is your first play through. The game veterans will be able to still enjoy this game though too. My personal feeling is that the Mega Drive/Genesis version of the game does miss something that the Amiga 500 version had. The crowd sounds on the Amiga were noticeably better when compared side by side. However, the 16-bit console versions are still well worth a play.
