Sega Mega Drive: Battle Squadron

Year: 1990
Genre: Vertical Shooter
Players: 2
Our Rating: 8/10

Mini Review

On the surface “Battle Squadron” is a typical top down retro vertical shoot ‘em up. There’s weapon upgrades, smart bombs, hordes of enemies and a variety of locations. Your task in either one or two player mode is to defeat the evil Barrax Empire.

Fly your battleship and destroy as much as you can along the way. I will always speak fondly of this game as it was one of the very first I played back in 1989. It was only later that I discovered that this game was a sequel to Hybris, yet another solid example of the genre. The pleasing thing about Battle Squadron is that it really hasn’t dated badly at all. The music and effects are simply timeless whilst the game play is still challenging and fresh. The Amiga version in particular has superior music and a great achievement for it’s time. This is still a two thumbs up game for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis.
