Klax! This game was a major release from Atari and then later by Tengen on the home systems. The premise is a simple one. You will be staring at a screen with a long conveyor belt disappearing in to the distance. Along this belt coloured blocks will appear and advance towards you. Your aim is to match coloured blocks in groups of five. These blocks can be arranged in vertical, horizontal or diagonal formations to create a Klax. As the blocks fall from the conveyor belt they can be stacked on the holder that the player controls before being dropped in to their final resting spot.

It’s possible to create combos, collect bonuses and also level warps should you reach certain levels or create special combinations. Whilst I do like Klax as a puzzle game it doesn’t generate the same joy as Tetris although the same frantic soul is actually very similar. I have the same issue with “Columns”. It’s not that the concept of creating patterns or matching colours is a bad one. It’s just that the game lacks a long lasting appeal. People are still playing Tetris today (and to an extent Klax too) so there must be something in this game that makes it addictive to some players. If you have never played Klax I would recommend a play 100% It’s still a great title for the 16-Bit consoles but even the 8-Bit versions still manage to keep my interest. The Puzzle game genre is one of those more than any other that generate the love/hate relationship, this may be a gem that you can’t believe you lived without.
