Mini Review
Frustration, that’s what’s coming your way if you boot up this blast from the past. Ghouls ‘n Ghosts is one of those retro games that makes you feel happy and angry at the same time. Learn the patterns of the enemy and you can speed run this one and look very impressive. For those (like myself) who still haven’t mastered the finer points, this could be a very long day for you. You control Sir Arthur on a quest to rescue Princess Prin Prin from the evil Lucifer/Loki and restore the stolen souls of the land. Along the way you will be attacked by a range of ghoulish enemies. The usual suspects such as zombies and demons are all to be found somewhere. There’s a range of power ups to aid your quest including better armor and various weaponry. Some of these can be found in chests which appear by shooting hidden patches on the level.
There’s a sense that the game makers wanted to add a bit of life in to this rather dark game. There are some nice touches as you are transformed in to a slow moving old man or a duck. The levels are also creative in subtle ways as environmental factors such as wind will push and pull you during the opening stages. Ghouls ‘n Ghosts is a solid title and has appeared in various incarnations on many console formats. The sound quality is particularly impressive for a Mega Drive/Genesis game, the effects and background music fit the game like a glove. It's worth remembering that this game is one of the eldest of the Mega Drive library. On a personal level I’d be lying if I said that this was in my top 10 Mega Drive games, it can get annoying as off screen projectiles appear with little notice. Although I do appreciate and understand why it is considered a classic by many fans. Overall I would recommend a play through if you can get hold of a copy.
