Mini Review

Rise of the Robots is a retro video game nasty in the worst way possible. Pre release it was hyped as a giant step forward in graphics and gaming experience. The cover even boasts "Music by Brian May". Acclaim had previouly published the world beating Mortal Kombat franchise and was now trying to deliver a next step forward in graphics. What the gaming community got though was just shocking, decades on those that were there to witness this horror have never forgotten about it. The game play is just so poor that i'm sure many to this day wonder if they are just playing an early test demo. The main character "Cyborg" is limited to about 7 moves (including walking directions and jumps). Despite the attempts to make this game slick and fast paced it is anything but. The controls are so wooden that you will wonder if your joy pad is broken. The idea behind the game is actually not so bad. For generations Japan has had an obsession with giant robots fighting and is a well established genre.

It's just that right from level one you fight "Loader". No kidding you acktually fight a fork-lift only with 2 moves. It's so painfully slow and unrewarding. What would make it worse? Well it seems that even the collision detection is broken too. Take a look at the article video, despite being right on top of the opponent and mashing the punch button there's no damage registered. Even the very fundamental functionallity of this game is missing. It's also important to remember that this game was released in 1994 when the 16-Bit era was approaching it's peak. Graphics and sound in other games of the time just put this to shame, just the year before in 1993 Mortal Kombat II had already far surpassed this game in concept, graphics, sound and playability. I really can't emphasise enough just how bad this game is. I have only ever played the Sega Mega Drive versions but I read comments on the internet of the SNES version being even worse. Quite frankly I can't even make myself test it. Just stay away from this one.
