Mini Review

Golden Axe for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis was a huge hit for Sega back in 1989. It was the perfect side scrolling beat ‘em up that combined magic energy bars, fantasy a good old fashioned retro game play. The premise to Golden Axe is that the evil Death Adder has captured the King and his daughter in the kingdom of Yuria. He has also stolen the legendary Golden Axe which is the magical power of the land. You control one of three characters; Gilius Thunderhead the dwarf, Tyris Flare the amazon and the Barbarian. Each has a different style and magical ability. Generally it’s a pay off between melee strength and magical special.

The amazons magic special at full power is a very impressive fire breathing fantasy dragon and well worth saving for the later boss fights. On the way to the castle you will be set upon by various henchmen on the Death Adder. The Barbarians and Skeleton enemies conjure up images of “Clash of the Titans”. The game play can get a little repetitive and button mashing although there are many options to hitch a ride on various fantasy beasts such as dragons to add variety in to this epic journey. If you get bored of the main story mode there is also the option of the Duel Mode added especially for the console version of the game. The player will go up against levels of more and more difficult opponents. Although this mode isn’t the main selling point of the game it is a nice distraction and can bee seen as a chance to practice your skills. Golden Axe is almost certainly one of the retro games that you will have heard of. Sega’s dominance of retro game hits in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s has enabled this title to make it on to a staggering amount of consoles in various remakes and resurrected retro game collection compilations. This game deserves the status of a Sega retro classic and I highly recommend a play through of this one with a friend.
